When Qwant announced its ambitious initiative last December to launch an SEO competition called Qwanturank, many SEO experts greeted the move with skepticism. At first glance, the objective seemed clear: to test indexing capabilities, evaluate the effectiveness of their algorithm, and stimulate innovation in a hypercompetitive environment. However, a little digging reveals that this promising project quickly revealed its limitations.

Initial analyses conducted by professionals like Olivier Andrieu revealed glaring anomalies. The finding: the platform was unable to generate relevant results, or even index all the pages mentioning the competition’s name. Worse, the search engine relied on Bing for most of its results, raising questions about the true nature of Qwant: a standalone search engine or simply a metasearch engine indexing other databases? The Technical and Strategic Limitations of the Qwanturank Competition in 2025

During the first few months following its launch, it became clear that the competition suffered from several major technical shortcomings. The most glaring concerned the indexing, which, instead of being automatically powered and improved by an algorithm,sophisticated, seemed to be done manually, which explains how quickly the results became static and inconsistent. The platform initially only listed the site’s homepage and few internal pages. The result: low visibility for participants, an essential criterion for a true SEO challenge. The expected performance of such a competition, supposed to stimulate innovation, thus fell flat. Beyond the technical aspect, another area of ​​weakness concerns Qwant’s communication strategy. The SEO community, accustomed to structured challenges where each participant can contribute their techniques and skills, quickly became disillusioned. The majority of the results produced were almost artistic in their layout, sometimes downright fanciful, even misleading the user. In short, on this point, the platform revealed its flaws: no real algorithmic monitoring or real results management. Furthermore, at the beginning of the year, on the website qwanturank-classement.fr , which centralizes ranking tracking, Qwant’s score gradually rose, dropping from -2.91 to -1.45. But this should not be misleading: the platform still offers a spectacle of often aberrant results.

Participants’ comments, often disappointed, highlight the lack of sophisticated approaches or concrete tests on the algorithm. A clear challenge: the competition is of little use as long as there is no automation or genuine technological innovation.

Future challenges and participants’ expectations regarding Qwant’s progress in 2025

Despite the initial disappointment, all SEO stakeholders seem to agree on one point: this competition, launched with the aim of testing their search engine, must evolve. The community expects concrete improvements, particularly in the indexing strategy and the relevance of results. Participants have until February 3rd to register, with the hope that real change will be made by the end of the competition, scheduled for June 3rd.
